We go behind the tasting room, past the menu, into the groves and the apiaries and the small operations nobody writes about. Then we bring you back something worth tasting.
Thomas McCall is a third-generation beekeeper. His hives sit in the wildflower fields of the Paso Robles Westside, where the bees forage the same land that produces some of California's most celebrated wine. Nobody has told his story. Until now.
He learned the craft from his grandfather Howard, who kept bees before Thomas was born. Now Thomas tends hundreds of hives across the Central Coast — placing them where the foraging is richest, where the wildflowers and the buckwheat and the fruit orchards make honey that tastes like a specific place in a specific season. Sierra Honey Farm honey is on the menu at In Bloom and Six Test Kitchen — Paso's two Michelin-starred restaurants. Most people eating it don't know where it comes from. We went to find out.

Love Paso covers Paso Robles the way the land actually works — by season. What's being harvested, what's being pressed, what the winemakers are watching, what the beekeepers are pulling from the hives. The place is never the same twice. Neither are we.
The most charged weeks of the year. Crush season, fermentation in the air, vineyards going gold.
Empty tasting rooms, dormant vines. The best time to actually talk to the winemaker.
The hills go green. Bud break. The wildflowers the bees have been waiting for.
Long evenings, warm afternoons. The olive groves at their most fragrant.
